EE word count: what counts?: IBO.

I don't know if anything's changed since 2008, but the advisory word count is wholly dependent on what subject you're doing your extended essay on. History and English EEs are traditionally the longest ones, and should aim for that 3500 - 4000 word count window.

An essay that is written on exact or any topic should have a high word count. Once an essay is complete then the word count can be computed by most word processing document.

I am trying to count all of the words in my document without the citations, e.g. (Lee et al., 2004). I have not cited the papers using endnotes or footnotes but in the actual text paragraphs so this option in the word count tool bar does not work.

I am curious, is there any way in to portray a truer word count which ignores in-text citations being, (Reference). I looked before, and I found something regarding formatting (I believe) in which would tell office to over look words within ( ). However, I have no idea how to implement this.

Sometimes direct quotes are counted and sometimes not. The general rule is that word count includes everything in the main body of the text - including headings, tables, citations, quotes, lists, etc. The list of references, appendices, and footnotes are generally not included in the word count.

I am using word 2010, it is strange that the word count works fine in a unformatted document when I convert but something in the end note citations or codes or something is messing it up And thanks for the copy and past idea I think for my separate Bibliography I should move all the unused references in to a group set then select all copy and paste if I have understood which really helps me so.

Or do I exclude the citations when adding up all of my words? Sometimes I have long surnames within citations and I don't really want to count these as 'words' within my essay. not sure what to do.

An essay that attempts to evade the word limit by including important material in footnotes or endnotes will be compromised across the assessment criteria.
